Harry Potter play wins record number Olivier Awards

The London theater production of Harry Potter makes history after winning the most number of Laurence Olivier Awards.

The London theater production of Harry Potter has made history after winning the most number of Laurence Olivier Awards.

London’s two-part ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ production, written by Jack Thorne, won nine Olivier Awards during a ceremony in London on Sunday.

The awards haul included the Virgin Atlantic Best New Play, Best Actor and Best Director, among others. The production surpassed both ‘Matilda’ and ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog In the Night Time’, each of which collected seven awards in their time.

The Harry Potter play won all but two of its 11 nominations, preparing itself for a run on Broadway next year.

As one of the most wildly popular plays in living memory, the Harry Potter production imagines Harry, Hermione and Ron as adults sending their children to Hogwarts School.

Critics have hailed the theater production as a producers’ dream play – both crazily popular and adored by critics.

The London play also won the Olivier Awards for Best Lighting Design, Best Sound Design, Best Costume Design, Best Set Design, Best Actor in a Supporting Role and Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ has been sold out for at least a year in London. The play will also be performed on Broadway, New York, where it is due to open in the spring of 2018.

This year’s edition of the Laurence Olivier Awards ceremony, which was established in 1976, was held at the Royal Albert Hall in London on April 9.
